Fighting against Social Isolation, with Clotilde Gilbert (WKF)

How Social Entrepreneurship Can Support the Reintegration of Former Prisoners

Social entrepreneurship supports prisoner reintegration by restoring dignity through work, rebuilding social connections, providing long-term guidance, and creating supportive ecosystems that reduce recidivism and enable sustainable reintegration into society.

Understanding the Challenges of Prison Reintegration

After seven years as a prison chaplain at the Nanterre detention center, Clotilde Gilbert witnessed how confinement and inactivity can desocialize, destabilize, and dehumanize individuals.

These structural conditions often make reintegration extremely difficult once people leave prison, increasing the risk of isolation and reoffending.

From Lived Experience to Social Action

In 2014, Clotilde transformed this firsthand experience into action by founding Wake Up Café, a social entrepreneurship initiative dedicated to supporting motivated prisoners.

The association focuses on:

  • Preparing individuals for life after prison
  • Providing long-term support
  • Guiding them toward sustainable reintegration without recidivism

Social entrepreneurship becomes a bridge between incarceration and full participation in society.

Reintegration Through Work, Trust, and Community

Wake Up Café’s approach is built on the belief that reintegration requires more than administrative support.

It prioritizes:

  • Meaningful work opportunities
  • Stable relationships and mentorship
  • Trust and personal responsibility

These elements help individuals rebuild confidence, social skills, and autonomy.

Creating Ecosystems for Social Impact

Beyond Wake Up Café, Clotilde is also the co-founder of Quai Liberté, a 2,000 m² space in Paris’s 15th arrondissement dedicated to social and solidarity initiatives (ESS).

The space includes:

  • A restaurant and terrace
  • Event and reception areas
  • A community committed to social impact

Quai Liberté serves as a living ecosystem where social entrepreneurship, employment, and community engagement intersect.

Reducing Recidivism Through Dignity and Belonging

Social entrepreneurship initiatives like Wake Up Café demonstrate that reducing recidivism requires restoring dignity and belonging.

By offering structured support, meaningful roles, and inclusive communities, these models address the root causes of exclusion rather than its symptoms.
